米国新日鉄シカゴ事務所では恒例の学生美術展「第15回アート・アプリシエー
ション・プログラム」が行われている。このプログラムは、文化活動の支援を通じて地域社会への貢献を図る主旨で1993年に開始。シカゴ美術館付属美術大学（
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago略称 SAIC ）の学生の応募作品から毎年およそ40点を厳選し
、 新日鉄シカゴ事務所内のギャラリーに年2回（冬期12月ー4月、春期5月ー11月）に分けて約20点ずつ展示している。作品が選ばれた学生には新日鉄から奨学金が贈られると共に、展示中に売却が成約した場合は、その全額が学生に支払われる事となっている。

これまで15年にわたる作品の応募総数は5953点、そのうち実際に展示されたのは565点。
今年度だけでも419点の応募があり、同社の美濃部慎次氏（米国新日鉄 副社長
兼シカゴ事務所長）、宮原達也氏（同事務所 営業課長）、山川雅代さん（同事務所 総務・営業担当）、
SAICのマイケル・ミラー教授（版画科）、 ナンシー・ギルダートさん（就職課次長）、斉藤博子助手（同プログラム・コーディネーター）による最終審査で39点の作品が絞られた。 |
同社では毎年、入選作品を紹介した記念パンフレットを発行しており、このデザインもSAICの大学院生によるもの。
今回はマーゴ・グラヘダさんが担当した。 ギャラリーでの作品設置は、多くの美術館で設置に関わるベテラン技術者、ティム・ダンカン氏が行った。 |

今回は日本の学生が1名含まれている。開催中の冬季展には黒田麻紗子さん（彫刻科4年、大阪出身）が布製のオブジェ『ビタミン・カレンダー（月
315）』を展示している。また、早稲田大学に１年通った経験があるマシュー・メスマーさん（版画科4年）は次回の展覧会に出品する。『銀座』という題で、うちわに刷られた木版画になるという。同じく春期展に写真『サマー』を展示するスアン・レイナーさん（大学院・美術療法科2年）は2005年以来、3年続けて同プログラムに選ばれている。

2月7日にはシカゴ市のフォーシズンズ・ホテルで15周年を記念する昼食会が開かれた。
会場では山川さんの司会のもと、美濃部事務所長が挨拶に立ち、トニー・ジョーンズSAIC学長と斉藤助手が続いた後、ミラー教授が入選した学生を紹介、最後に篠田研次シカゴ総領事が祝辞を述べて締めくくった。 |
新日鉄ギャラリーは平日（月ー金）午前10時から午後4時まで、無料で一般に公開している。（要電話予約。）

Nippon Steel USA Promotes 15th Annual SAIC Student Art Exhibit
Chicago -- The Chicago Office of Nippon Steel USA Inc. (NSUSA) is home
to an efficiently designed gallery space which is used for the exhibition
of approximately 40 pieces of artwork by students of the School of the
Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
The show is divided into two parts, winter (December - April) and spring
(May - November), with some 20 works displayed in each show. Each student
whose work is selected for the exhibit receives a monetary award, as well
as the opportunity to sell their work commission-free.
This Art Appreciation Program was started in 1993 by NSUSA in order to
provide SAIC students with exposure to the larger Chicago community, and
in order to offer the local Japanese community an opportunity to support
Chicago-based cultural activities.
The NSUSA gallery has displayed 565 works out of 5953 submissions from
SAIC students in the past 15 years. This year alone, 419 slides were submitted.
39 pieces survived the final cut made by the selection committee, a group
which consists of NSUSA's Shinji Minobe (Executive Vice President and General
Manager), Tatsuya Miyahara (Marketing Services Manager) and Masayo Yamakawa
(Administrative Assistant), along with SAIC's Michael Miller (Professor,
Printmedia), Nancy Gildart (Assistant Director, Career Development), and
Hiroko Saito (Coordinator, the NSUSA / SAIC Art Appreciation Program).
The pamphlets for the 15th annual exhibition were designed by SAIC graduate
student Margo Graxeda, who was assigned to the project specifically for
this year’s program. Veteran gallery-technician Tim Duncan installed the
selected works in the office gallery.
In this year’s competition, the work of one undergraduate student from
Japan was selected, that of Masaco Kuroda (Sculpture, 4th year). The Osaka-born
Kuroda's fiber work, "Vitamin Calendar (Month 315)," is on view
in the current show. Mathew Messmer (Printmedia, 4th year) will display
his piece, "Ginza," woodblock print on Japanese round fan, in
the next exhibition. He studied at Waseda University in Tokyo for a year
before moving to Chicago last fall. In this year’s spring show, Suanne
Rayner (Art Therapy, 2nd year, gradauate) will display her c-print "Summer."
Her work has been selected for the program for three consecutive years,
from 2005 to 2007.
On February 7th at Four Seasons Hotel, a commemorative luncheon was held,
emceed by NSUSA's Yamakawa. At the reception, NSUSA Chicago’s General
Manager Minobe, Consul-General of Japan Kenji Shinoda, SAIC President Tony
Jones, Professor Miller, and Associate Saito congratulated all of the selected
students.
The Nippon Steel USA, Chicago exhibit is open to the public by appointment
from Monday to Friday between 10 am and 4 pm.
