米国新日本製鐵シカゴ事務所は３月２２日「第１３回アート・アプリシエー ション・プログラム」の開催を記念してシカゴ市フォーシーズンズ・ホテルで 恒例の昼食パーティーを行った。 このプログラムは、文化活動の支援を通じて地域社会への貢献を図る主旨で １９９３年に開始。シカゴ美術館付属美術大学（ The School of the Art Institute of Chicago 略称 SAIC ）の学生の応募作品から毎年４０点を厳選し 、 新日鐵シカゴ事務所内のギャラリーに年２回（冬期 １２月ー４月、春期 ５月ー１１月）に分けて２０点ずつ展示している。 |
| 作品が選ばれた学生には、 新日鐵から奨学金が贈られると共に、展示中に売却が成約したした場合は、その 全額が学生に支払われる事となっている。 今年度は３３０点の応募があり、同社の古田陽一氏（米国新日本製鐵 副社長 兼シカゴ事務所長）、山川雅代さん（同事務所 総務・営業担当）、 ＳＡＩＣのマイケル・ミラー教授（版画科）、 トーマス・スローン教授（美術史科）、斉藤博子助手（同プログラム・ コーディネーター）による最終審査で４１点の作品が選ばれた。 ＳＡＩＣ大学院生ディー・シュミドガルさんがパンフレットのデザインを 担当した。 |

今回は日本人学生が４名含まれている。現在開催中の冬季展には 池田千夏さん（絵画科３年、大阪出身）が油彩『自画像／赤いジャケット』、 黒田麻紗子さん（繊維研究科３年、大阪出身）が写真『＝（スペクト）８』 を出品。次回の春季展には細井澄子さん（絵画科４年、栃木出身）が 油彩『逃亡』、佐野純子さん（大学院美術教育学部１年、東京出身）が 版画『強迫観念 ５』を展示する。 |

パーティー会場では古田事務所長が挨拶に立ち、続いて吉澤裕シカゴ総領事、 トニー・ジョーンズＳＡＩＣ学長、ミラー教授、斉藤助手が祝辞を述べた。 ジョーンズ学長は２００４年９月に東京藝術大学に於いて平山郁夫学長と共に 国際交流協定に調印し、ＳＡＩＣが米国の美術大学として初めて東京芸大の 提携校となったことを報告した。 |

調印式では、高名な日本画家でもある 平山氏がＳＡＩＣと新日鉄の長期的な協力事業に関心を示した。
２００４年秋、東京芸大はＳＡＩＣにニューヨークのスクール・オブ・ ビジュアルアーツを加えた３校の卒業生によるグループ展『場の語り
Voice of Site：東京、シカゴ、ニューヨーク』を開催しており、同展は ２００５年にニューヨークに巡回、シカゴは来年の開催を予定。

Chicago -- The Chicago Office of Nippon Steel USA Inc. (NSUSA) hosted
a luncheon celebrating the opening of the 13th annual Student Art Appreciation
Program at the Four Seasons Hotel on March 22. NSUSA Chicago has a handsomely
designed gallery space for the exhibition of 40 artworks by students from
the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC).
The show is divided into two parts, winter (December - April) and spring
(May - November), with 20 works per show. Each student whose work is selected
for the exhibit receives a monetary award, as well as the opportunity to
sell their work commission-free. The program began in 1993 by NSUSA Chicago
in order to provide SAIC students with exposure to the larger Chicago community,
as well as to offer an opportunity for the local Japanese community to
support Chicago-based cultural activities.
This year alone, 330 slides were submitted by SAIC students. 41 pieces
survived the final cut made by the selection committee, which includes
NSUSA's Yoichi Furuta (Executive Vice President and General Manager), and
Masayo Yamakawa (Administrative Assistant), SAIC's Michael Miller (Professor,
Printmedia), Thomas Sloan (Professor, Art History), and Hiroko Saito (Coordinator,
the NSUSA / SAIC Art Appreciation Program). The annual exhibition pamphlets
were designed by SAIC graduate student Dee Schmidgall. At the reception,
NSUSA Chicago General Manager Furuta, Consulate General of Japan Yutaka
Yoshizawa, SAIC President Tony Jones, Professor Miller and Associate Saito
congratulated the students.
Four Japanese students of three undergraduate (BFA) and one graduate
(MA) programs were selected for this year's exhibitions: Chinatsu Ikeda
(Painting, 3rd year, BFA), Masaco Kuroda (Fiber, 3rd year, BFA), Sumiko
Hosoi (Painting, 4th year, BFA) and Junko Sano (1st year, Art Education,
MA). Ikeda's oil painting "Self-portrait/ red jacket" and Kuroda's
photography "= (spect) VIII" are on view at the present show.
Hosoi's oil painting "Runaway" and Sano's print "Obsession
5" will be in the spring.
In his speech Jones proudly mentioned that for SAIC he signed an international
exchange agreement with President Ikuo Hirayama of the Tokyo National University
of Fine Arts and Music (Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku) in September, 2004, when
he visited Japan. SAIC became the first American art school to start an
exchange program with the top art university in Asia. At the signing ceremony
in Tokyo, Hirayama, famous Nihonga (traditional Japanese painting) artist
also, was pleased to learn that SAIC has a long-term partnership with Nippon
Steel.
In the autumn of 2004, the two schools collaborated to hold a group
exhibition "Voice of Site: Tokyo, Chicago and New York" featuring
installation work by recent alumni of the two along with School of Visual
Arts in New York. The show was a success in Tokyo, traveled to New York
City in 2005, and is planned to be in Chicago next year. "Voice of

The Nippon Steel USA, Chicago exhibit is open to the public by appointment,
from Monday to Friday between 10 am and 4 pm. The office is located at
900 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 1820. The current show runs through April
